Enjoy a cookie made with wholesome ingredients but without the refined sugar and flour. This special treat is also made without butter, so it can be enjoyed guilt free.

These days most people are trying to avoid unhealthy treats. Refined flour and sugars in most baked goods make cookies almost an unforbidden food.

Although it is a good idea to limit sweets, even those made with unrefined natural sugars, a pastry that is made with healthier ingredients is always a much better pick. Processed pastries are full of unhealthy syrups, bleached flour, refined sugars and preservatives.

A home baked treat made with whole grains, unrefined sugar and unbleached flour at least has some nutritional value and can even contain fiber if made with whole wheat. The following recipe for oatmeal chocolate chips will deliver great tasting cookies made with natural wholesome ingredients.

Ingredients for Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (whole wheat white flour can also be used)
  • 1 cup quick-cooking whole grain oats
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 egg (or equivalent egg whites/egg substitute if desired)
  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • 1/4 cup natural creamy peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup raw sugar cane sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 4 ounces of dark chocolate chips

Directions for Baking the Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Next, in a large bowl mix the flour, the oats, the baking soda, the baking powder and the salt together, then set them aside.
  3. Cream the applesauce, the sugars and the peanut butter in a large bowl with an electric beater until the mixture becomes fluffy and light, about 3 to 5 minutes.
  4. Add the vanilla extract and the egg, or egg whites, to the sugar and applesauce mixture and blend them in thoroughly.
  5. Add in the flour and oats mixture that was set aside earlier very gradually and blending it very well.
  6. Stir in the dark chocolate chips.
  7. Place tablespoonful sized pieces of the dough onto ungreased baking sheets about 2 inches apart from each other.
  8. Bake the cookies for about 11 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Let the cookies cool for a few minutes and then remove from the baking sheets placing them on a wire rack to cool completely.

The cookie dough can be frozen and stored for baking at a later time.

These cookies come out very tasty and will satisfy any craving. The wholesome ingredients used in the mixture, such as the peanut butter, applesauce, whole wheat flour and whole grain oats are healthy and nutritious. Indulge sparingly, though, as the cookies still contain sugar and it is a good idea to always limit any sugar intake.
