Apple Crisp and Apple Turnovers Using Delicious Autumn Fruit

Apples are ripe and sweet in the fall. Delight family and guests with the tastes of autumn by making either of two delicious dessert recipes: apple crisp or turnovers.

Nothing says autumn quite like delicious, warm apple dessert recipes. These sweet apple treats will be enjoyed by the whole family, young and old. If time is short, try putting together the comforting, pleasing New England Apple Crisp in minutes and let it bake in the oven while everyone eats dinner. For a special treat, bring Flaky Apple Turnovers to an autumn party or Halloween gathering. They can be served warm or cold.

New England Apple Crisp

Comforting apple crisp will please the pickiest of palettes during the autumn season. Try serving this version with vanilla ice cream or freshly whipped cream.

Ingredients

  • 8 firm apples, such as Jonagold or Granny Smith
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (to prevent browning)
  • ½ cup sugar (light brown or granulated)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¾ cup all purpose flour
  • 6-8 tablespoons salted butter, cut into small chunks
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • Cooking spray

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Spray baking dish with cooking spray.
  3. Prepare apples by peeling, coring, and cutting into bite sized chunks.
  4. Toss apples with lemon juice in a bowl to avoid browning.
  5. Add ½ cup sugar, cinnamon, and cloves to bowl and stir until apples are coated.
  6. Pour apple mixture into a baking dish.
  7. In another bowl, mix together the flour, brown sugar, and butter using hands to soften and blend butter. Mixture should look like small peas.
  8. Sprinkle flour mixture on top of apple mixture in baking dish so that the apple mixture is completely covered.
  9. Bake in oven for 45 minutes.

Flaky Apple Turnovers

A great addition to autumn or Halloween parties, apple turnovers will be snapped up in minutes. They can also be a wonderful after school snack.

Ingredients

  • 4 ripe, firm apples such as Rome or Golden Delicious
  • 2 sheets of frozen puff pastry, thawed at room temperature
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon each grated lemon and orange peel
  • ¾ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon egg wash (egg mixed with water) for brushing
  • 2 tablespoons sugar for sprinkling

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Roll pastry dough on floured surface into a square approximately 12 inches.
  3. Cut into four equal squares with a sharp, floured knife.
  4. Repeat with second pastry sheet.
  5. Prepare apples by coring, peeling, and cutting into bite sized chunks.
  6. In a bowl, mix together all remaining ingredients except egg wash and sugar to sprinkle.
  7. Add apples to bowl and coat well.
  8. Place equal amounts apple mixture into the center of each pastry square and fold diagonally.
  9. Seal edges of turnovers with water and fork, brush with egg wash, and sprinkle with sugar.
  10. Cut three vent slits into each turnover before baking.
  11. Place turnovers on a nonstick baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes.
