The use of a slow cooker can create tasty meals with little effort.

Ham is a popular holiday meat for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Learn how to make the next holiday ham dinner in a way that will impress everyone. Although making ham in the oven is popular, it tends to dry the meat out. If you use your crock pot this time, you will create a sweet, juicy ham that your family will beg you to make again and again.

Ham Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Ham with bone in
  • one cup apple juice
  • teaspoon honey
  • teaspoon honey Dijon mustard

Note: When picking out your ham remember that it must fit in your crock pot, so be sure to not get one that is too big. You can purchase one of those hams that comes with the packet of seasoning that you spread on before heating, and either save the packet of seasoning for another meal or throw it away.

  1. Place the ham in the crock pot, and pour the apple juice over it. This juice will help to keep the ham moist while providing great flavor.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the honey and Dijon mustard together. If you would like more spread, you can add equal parts of each. Depending on the size of the ham, you may need more or less of the mixture. Once the mustard and honey are blended, use the back of your spoon to spread it on the top of the ham.
  3. Cover and cook the ham on the lowest setting for 6-8 hours. Starting it in the morning is fine to then eat the ham for dinner. If you are concerned about over cooking due to a late dinner time, simply drop the setting to warm after the ham has had a chance to heat through.

Uses for Leftover Ham

Cooking a whole ham for a weekday dinner can be a great money saving technique. For a typical family dinner, you will eat about a quarter of the ham when dinner includes a couple of side dishes. After dinner, shave some ham in thin slices to save in the refrigerator for sandwiches. Cut the remaining ham off the bone, and store in the freezer for future dinners. If you will get two dinners out of the left over's, freeze in separate containers to make meal preparation easier.

Ham is a great dinner meat that is easy to cook, serve and store for future meals. Cooking your own ham can save money, and provide opportunity for you to create your own great flavor.
