Dirt cake is a birthday party favorite and a festive Halloween dessert. There are a few tricks for making this delightful dessert and eating it without guilt.

The components of dirt cake can be quite intimidating for health conscious individuals. The ingredients seem to contain loads of sugar and calories. Following these directions will relieve a calorie counter’s worries without compensating great dirt cake (with gummy worms) taste.

Reduced Fat Dirt Cake

Key Ingredients

  • 2 packages of reduced fat Oreo cookies
  • 8 oz tub of 1/3 less fat cream cheese
  • 1/4 cup of yogurt butter (sold in tub)
  • 12 oz tub of fat free cool whip
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 cups of skim milk
  • 1 small package of instant vanilla pudding
  • 1 small package of instant chocolate pudding
  • 1 small package of gummy worms
  • 1 colorful beach bucket and trowel

Mixing it Together

  1. Follow the instant pudding directions. After the pudding has come to a light boil on the stove, mix the pudding from the chocolate and vanilla pots together and place them in one large pot in the freezer (30 minutes). This will speed up the cooling process of the pudding.
  2. Place the powdered sugar, cream cheese and yogurt butter together in a large mixing bowl and place it in the microwave for 1 minute- until the butter and cream cheese are completely soft but not watery.
  3. After the pudding has cooled, add two cups of skim milk to it and stir together. Then mix the pudding consistency with the previously melted ingredients in the large mixing bowl. All ingredients should be in the large mixing bowl at this time.
  4. Take the tub of cool whip and slowly mix it in to the large bowl. Do not plop the cool whip in all at once. Use all 12 oz of the cool whip and stir it in with the other ingredients for about 10 minutes, or until the consistency is fluffy and the same light chocolate color throughout.

The Fun Part

Start with one layer of crushed Oreos at the bottom of the beach bucket (1-inch thick). Next, pour a 1-inch layer of dirt cake batter and alternate the Oreo crumbs and batter until the bucket is full. The gummy worms may be added to the top layer of the Oreo dirt cake or can be sporadically thrown in throughout the layering process.

Dirt Cake Leftovers

There will surely be leftovers. This reduced fat dirt cake recipe yields far more batter than the serving bucket can hold. Depending on the amount of people or children being served, it is suggested that at least 1 cup of Oreo crumbs is left to the side so that the leftover batter can be used to make mini dirt cakes in Tupperware bowls or dishes. Relax and enjoy a bowl of this low calorie chocolate treat.
