Quick, easy and mouth-watering apple crumble recipe to top off any meal.

Apple crumble is always a satisfying and delicious dessert option that goes well with any meal and that kids and adults both enjoy. This quick and easy apple crumble doesn’t require a pie crust, has minimal preparation time, uses only a few simple ingredients and bakes in half an hour.

Ingredients

Apple Crumble Filling:

  • 1 tin pie apples or 5-6 large fresh apples (cored and sliced - peel if desired)
  • 2 tablespoons raisins
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Apple Crumble Topping:

  • 1 cup self-raising flour
  • 1 cup raw oats
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (melted on stovetop)

Recipe Directions

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). In a medium sized bowl, mix together the sliced apples, raisins, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, and cinnamon. Stir well. If the type of fresh apples used are tart (e.g. Granny Smiths), add a little extra sugar. In a separate bowl, mix together the oats, flour, the rest of the sugar and the melted butter. The mixture should be moist but not too soft. Ensure that the dry ingredients bind together.

Spread the apple mixture evenly in an oven proof dish (greasing is not necessary as the natural juices from the apples usually prevent the crumble from sticking). Spread the oat crumble mixture evenly on top of the apples. Bake the apple crumble for roughly half an hour, or until the topping is golden brown. To add to the flavour and texture, crisp up the topping by placing the crumble under the grill for a few minutes before serving. Serve with vanilla ice-cream, fresh whipped cream or custard.

Recipe Alternatives

This simple apple crumble recipe can be easily adapted and embellished according to taste. A healthier alternative is to replace the brown sugar with Splenda or other sweeteners suitable for baking (follow the Splenda directions carefully as less is needed than with regular sugar).

Other great alternatives for the apple mix are to:

  • use a mix of different types of red and green fresh apples
  • add a can of pears or 2-3 fresh sliced pears
  • add a cup of fresh blueberries or raspberries

For a richer taste and texture, substitute half of the oats with half a cup of Nutty Wheat or wheat germ. The recipe is forgiving in terms of measurements and can easily be expanded to feed more people – just ensure the crumble topping has sufficient melted butter to bind the dry ingredients.

For a delicious entree idea to begin the meal, try a simple but tasty vegetarian lasagne, crispy garlic bread and a greek salad.
