Fewer desserts are as rich or as popular in the U.S. as pecan pie. A southern classic, pecan pie requires only a few ingredients and can compliment any occasion.

Pecan pie is a classic easy-to-make dessert enjoyed by people all over the United States. In the early 1900's, Americans living in the south began to serve pecan pie for Thanksgiving and Christmas, for it was during the fall harvest when the ripened nuts were readily available. Today, modern shipping methods and international trade have made it possible for consumers all over the U.S. and throughout the world to enjoy pecan pie at any time of year.

A Brief History of Pecans and Pecan Pie

Pecan trees are native to the southern part of North America. Mature nuts are harvested during the months of September to December. Pecan pie originated in the south, supposedly after French settlers arrived in Louisiana. However, the first recipes for the rich dessert did not appear until the early twentieth century. As people harvested pumpkins and other fall bounty – including the pecan nuts – pecan pie recipes evolved. Serving the pie to family and guests during Thanksgiving and Christmas became a tradition.

The makers of Karo corn syrup helped to make pecan pie popular. Improved means of transportation and the convenience of grocery stores made it possible for anyone in the U.S. to enjoy the dessert all year 'round. Today, pecans can be shipped to most any place in the world and are used in thousands of dessert recipes. The gooey rich flavor of pecan pie still remains a popular favorite of the southern U.S.

Light or dark corn syrup may be used in traditional basic pecan pie recipes. Two common variations on the pecan pie recipe include adding chocolate or whiskey, but the original pecan pie remains unbeatable.

  • 3 tablespoons margarine
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs slightly beaten
  • 1 cup Karo light corn syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups pecan pieces
  • 1 9-inch deep dish pie shell (do not bake)

Directions for baking:

Heat oven to 350 degrees.

  1. Melt the margarine and combine thoroughly with sugar, beaten eggs, corn syrup, and vanilla.
  2. Add pecan pieces and stir well.
  3. Pour mixture into prepared pie shell and carefully place on center rack in the oven. (Place pie on a cookie sheet for easier handling.)
  4. Bake 1 hour (Oven temperatures can vary, so adjust as needed.) Test pie by inserting a sharp knife halfway between the center and the edge. Knife should come out clean.
  5. Allow pie to cool before serving.

Makes 1 9-inch pie.

Note: Serve with a generous dollop of whipped cream if desired.
