These peanut butter chocolate squares make for a great treat for kids, a sugary delight at a dinner party, or a homemade substitute to packaged peanut butter cups.

Chocolate and peanut butter make for a pair that is a delicious blend of sweet and salty, and that is a temptation that few can resist. Kids often display their love for the two by wearing chocolate smudges around their mouths -- and persistent beggings for more. Adults tend to be a bit more discreet in their love, but still fall into the desire for just one more... This recipe for peanut butter chocolate squares is sure to satisfy a craving for chocolate or peanut butter, leave the mouth watering for more, and is easy to make.

The simplicity of the recipe makes it great for someone who isn't too comfortable in the kitchen but still wants to make a homemade treat to impress friends and family. It can also be a great recipe to involve kids in preparing -- and licking spoons. The final product is suitable for serving as a dessert dish at a dinner or other event, or for dividing into individual squares as small gifts or a bake sale item. No matter who is involved in making the squares or where they are eaten, they will be a fun and delicious treat.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Squares

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup margarine (Earth Balance or Nucoa)
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 4 1-oz squares of Baker's chocolate
  • 8 oz semi-sweet vegan chocolate chips
  • 1 T margarine (Earth Balance or Nucoa)

Directions:

  1. Mix the sugars, 1/4 cup margarine, and peanut butter together until smooth. It's okay to use an electric mixer, if desired.
  2. Evenly press the mixture into a square, 9-in pan.
  3. Use your fingers to press and smooth the surface of the mixture.
  4. Using a double boiler, melt the chocolate and 1 T margarine until smooth. Stir occasionally to evenly mix. You can also use a microwave to melt the chocolate and margarine in a microwave-safe bowl. If you do this, remove the mixture from the microwave after every minute to stir it. Repeat until all of the chocolate is melted.
  5. Evenly spread the chocolate over the peanut butter mixture in the pan.
  6. Refrigerate.
  7. After the chocolate begins to set, use a sharp knife to cut it into 1-in squares. Do not wait until the chocolate hardens all the way because then it will chip and break more as you cut it.
  8. Refrigerate until the chocolate completely sets.
  9. Serve chilled or at room temperature.
  10. Enjoy!
