Ice cream cakes can be simple to create with the correct ingredients. An easy, no cook recipe uses ice cream sandwiches, a whipped topping, candy bars, and some syrup.

No matter the season or the occasion, ice cream cakes are a cool and enjoyable dessert. Many store bought cakes make their cakes almost completely out of ice cream. There is an alternative to these cakes that is easy to make at home. With a few ingredients and the proper freezing time, an ice cream cake can be created without cooking or use of any special utensils.

Total Prep Time

If buying the items from a store, only about 10 minutes will be needed to combine the items. From this point, the cake should remain in the freezer for about 3 hours. If the whipped topping is frozen, additional time will be needed for this to thaw should it is easy to spread. A few minutes will also be needed to break the candy bars into small pieces for the center and top of the cake.

Ice Cream Cake Recipe

Serving size: depending on portion size; between 12 to 24 people

Ingredients:

  • 2- boxes of ice cream sandwiches (2 may be left over)
  • 1- 12 oz. jar of syrup (chocolate, caramel, or strawberry)
  • 2- candy bars; crushed (best if hard bar; Health, Hershey’s)
  • 1- 1lb whipped topping (not frozen, thawed a little to ease spreading)

Directions:

  1. Place a ½ inch layer of whipped topping on the bottom of a 9 x 13 pan. Also place a thin layer of the topping on the sides of the pan. This should take about 1/3 of the whipped topping container.
  2. Put a layer of ice cream sandwiches on the bottom of the pan. There should be three vertical lines of sandwiches and one layer horizontal line.
  3. Apply another layer of the whipped topping. Gently drizzle a layer of the chosen syrup on top of the whipped topping. Generously apply one candy bar onto the topping and syrup.
  4. Put another layer of ice cream sandwiches on top of the previous layer. Add another layer of the whipped topping (this can be as thick as you like). Drizzle more of the syrup and then apply the last candy bar.
  5. Place in the freezer for at least 3 hours. Overnight is preferred and creates a more solid cake to cut.

With these simple steps it is easy to create an ice cream cake. There are many possible combinations to try. This can include switching syrups between layers to changing the flavor of the ice cream sandwiches. It is also possible to freeze softer candy bars (snickers, milky ways) to break into pieces for the cake. Other simple desserts to try include cinnamon apple dessert pizza, Butterfinger candy bar pudding, and pumkin drop cookies.
