Trying out fudge recipes can be a daunting task if you don't know just how easy it really is. But if you follow these simple no-fuss steps, it's as easy as 1-2-3

Let's admit it, we have all been there. In our quest to try homemade fudge recipes, we have ended up with sticky, granular goo in our saucepans; we have burnt the butter and sugar; we have even ended up with a dodgy-looking mass that is hard enough to knock somebody's brains out with.

But what most people don't know is that a good fudge recipe is actually deceptively simple; what's more, you can create vanilla fudge, coffee fudge or just plain fudge just as easily and the results earn you a lot of praises as well. This gorgeous golden homemade fudge keeps very well in an air-tight container too and is the perfect treat on special occasions.

For this simple, irresistibly smooth golden treat, all you need is a handful of ingredients and you're all set to producing a culinary masterpiece.

Easy Milk Fudge Recipe

Fudge recipe ingredients:

  • Condensed milk, 375g
  • Regular castor sugar, 450 g
  • Butter softened, 100g
  • Vanilla extract or coffee essence, 1 tsp (absolutely optional)

You will also need a few simple things around your kitchen:

  • A medium-sized saucepan
  • A wooden stirring spoon
  • A wide baking sheet or platter to cool and set the fudge
  • A bowl of cold tap water

Also make sure that your kitchen sink is clean and clear of any clutter. Now let's get on with cooking our fudge!

Directions:

  1. Place the saucepan on medium heat and add the butter
  2. While it melts, add the condensed milk and sugar. (For vanilla fudge recipe, add vanilla extract at this stage)
  3. Gently stir the mixture around until the sugar dissolves. Still stirring, bring the mixture to a rolling boil and then turn down the heat
  4. Keep cooking the fudge mixture while stirring at low heat. Do not stop stirring or it will caramelise too quickly. You need to cook it for a good 8 - 10 minutes
  5. After 8 - 10 minutes, scoop out a teaspoon of the fudge mixture and drop it into a bowl of cold tap water. Test it with your bare hands; it should form a soft ball in your hands.
  6. As soon as this soft-ball stage is reached, remove saucepan from the heat and plunge its base into a sink of cold tap water. Keep stirring the fudge mixture with the wooden spoon; it should be turning quite stiff and grainy now
  7. When it gets difficult to stir and gets a rough/ granular consistency, it's done
  8. Remove the saucepan from its water bath and scoop out the fudge mixture onto a wide shallow platter. Spread the fudge in a 1cm thick layer and set aside to cool (around 15 minutes)
  9. Cut the golden homemade fudge into nibble-sized squares and serve

Notes:

  • You can use a flat spatula or spoon to spread the fudge mixture out evenly to cool
  • For the ultimate give-away treat, stack a pile of yummy fudge squares into a clear cellophane wrap and bunch it up with a curly ribbon on top. You will be the favourite of every party around. Go on then, give it a go! Bon apetit!
